The Zielgerat "Vampir" 1299

At the end of the war the Wehrmacht came out with an interesting idea. The Zielgerat 1229 (ZG1229) also called Vampir. Basically it was an MP44 adaptation for night shooting. The gun was mounted with an infra-red sight connected to 30 pounds battery backpack.

The grenadier carrying it was known as Nachtjager (night-hunter).

When I went to 'Nam.... In 2010. I heard some stories about a very special group of men, the tunnel rats. They were the ones going down into the darkness of the VC tunnel, armed with a simple pistol, flashlight and a whole lots of balls.  So, for my first post, a tunnel rat story I found on the net.
